Grandfather COBOL

According to some of my friends, a welcome page to COBOL would be more appropriately named: "Welcome To Hell..."

I have have a entirely different view on the matter.

Just like I belief in the common good in all people, I belief in the common good in all programming languages...

Also: Every programming language has its strengths and weaknesses, and by looking at the picture, I think Grandfather COBOL has some weakness in his back...

COBOL

On a more serious note: I have been taught COBOL for about two years now and I have never had to work so hard on a language in my life!

I take pride, not offence as other may, when somebody dares to call me a COBOL programmer.

I have no real desire, but would not mind if the money is good, to become a COBOL programmer. I do however belief that every second I spend on COBOL was worth it!

COBOL thought me the value of carefully designing programs before coding them, and has ten-folded my structured programming- and organizational skills.

Make no mistake about it, in a language where all variables are global, it is truly an amazing feat to get a BIG project working perfectly!

My hat goes off to all real COBOL programmers of the past and present --- You are all my heroes... but Superman will still kick you asses! :)

THE HORROR!!!

And now: The real reason for this page...

The unspeakable horror that's been terrifying Development Software II students for decades...

A thing so terrifying and unmentionable that it is simply referred to as: "THE SYSTEM".

What is THE SYSTEM, and what can it do, you may be thinking...

THE SYSTEM

THE SYSTEM is a daemon of the evilest kind, and it is believed to eat all, but the most hard-core programmers alive...

It is also believed that it is a prophet of Grandfather COBOL, a curse on student kind set to destroy all...

The lucky few that survives will be haunted by it forever!

THE SYSTEM has also the remarkable ability to consume time itself! Students that have been faced with this horror have reported days missing they have no memory of...

Unfortunately no one can be told what THE SYSTEM is, you have to be showed...

Enough silliness for one page???

THE SYSTEM is basically a assignment given to all Development Software II students in the last module of the year to complete.

The specifications is given to us at the beginning of the year, at which stage most of us are clueless on how to do it, and simply have so many other COBOL assignments that you never actually get to it till the final module.

This assignment truly destroy some students, and many never complete it or even have something decent to hand in!

I have seen one of my female friends in tears more than once because of the system. In fact, a few minutes ago she was crying while speaking to me on the phone, telling me she has given up...

You have now idea how that makes me feel, but what can I do? If you can't complete this system on your own, you will never really be able to handle something like this in the real world...

To all those who manage to complete it successfully, one day when I am the CEO of a big company, you will have a place in it. :)

Free Download

Please download my implementation of the system and see what can be done in COBOL. (Also as a kind of visual CV for me)

THE SYSTEM 2.04 MB

I have not, and will never, included the source code. If anybody wants it, it can be bought from me, to much blood and sweet went into it to give it away...

I tried to stay as close to the ANSI85 COBOL standard as Fujitsu COBOL 3.0 would allow me.

Don't be alarmed by the file sizes when extracted, they are the cause of the way Fujitsu COBOL 3.0 links files, and more importantly, to discourage ANY form of commercial use.
